[MV] 5th December 2011 : '84th Long Live The King of Thailand' - '

5th December - H.M. King of Thailand Birthday (Wan Chalerm).

An important public holiday is held on 5 December to celebrate the birthday of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world's longest reigning monarch. Known in Thai as 'Wan Chalerm', the occasion is marked by an outpouring of love and reverence by Thai people throughout the kingdom and around the world.

His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, or King Rama IX, ascended the throne on 9 June 1946. The King has won a special place in the hearts of the Thai people through his combination of devotion to the welfare and development of his people, and a keen understanding and awareness of political and social issues. As an institution, His Majesty has provided a firm foundation for the country to weather the trials and turmoil that have beset the region since the end of World War II. Today, His Majesty continues to play a central role in a wide spectrum of national and social development schemes.

On 5 December, buildings and homes all over the country are elaborately adorned with flags, portraits of His Majesty and bunting, predominantly in the color yellow. Around the Grand Palace and Ratchadamnoen Avenue areas of Bangkok, thousands of vividly colored marigolds decorate the streets. On the evening of the holiday itself, the streets around Ratchadamnoen and Sanam Luang are closed to traffic and thousands of people take to the streets. Spectacular fireworks displays are held and the atmosphere is joyous and festive. The best way to enjoy the atmosphere is to take a bus to the Rattanakosin area, and just stroll along the crowded but traffic-free streets for a truly memorable experience.

The 15th of the 8th Month of lunar calendar is when the entire Korean population head for their hometowns to celebrate Chuseok (추석) or Full Moon Harvest. For this year (2010), Chuseok will be on Sep. 22nd . It will be a long holiday in Korea.

Chuseok is one of the two biggest holidays in Korea. It is considered the Korean equivalent of Thanksgiving, and a time to honor ancestors with newly harvested grains and fruits.

People from all parts of the country visit their hometowns. They hold ancestral memorial services with traditional foods. Chuseok goes by other names such as Chochunil, Chungchujeol, Gabae and Hangawi, all of which means a great day.

The main drawback to Chuseok is the horrendous traffic. The trip back home can take more than 10 hours by car, but people don't seem to mind the inconvenience. Instead, they look forward to seeing their families and friends. Kids dress up in new hanbok, or traditional Korean dress, that are picked out especially for the occasion.

In the old days, Chuseok was also a time when people changed their clothing for autumn. Preparing new clothes for the holidays stems from that tradition.

Chuseok's history dates back about two thousand years old to the time of Silla King Euri, who ruled during the legendary period of the Three Kingdoms. He wanted to help the weaving industry grow so he organized a national weaving contest. The losers had to prepare certain foods for the winners. This was the origin of Chuseok, a holiday which later spread throughout the peninsula.

Chuseok spans three days according to the lunar calendar. The first event on Chuseok day is the ancestral rite. Offerings prepared days in advance are set on the altar for the ritual.

A family gathering in Korea means hearty eating. Once the ancestral rite is over, the entire family takes part in a grand feast. Unlike the lunar New Year's Day when tteokguk, or rice cake soup, is prepared, Chuseok features newly harvested rice used to brew rice wine and rice cakes. One popular dish eaten during the holidays is the soup toran, or beef broth with the starchy rootstock taro.

People also prepare holiday foods such as songpyeon, or full moon rice cakes stuffed with sesame, beans, chestnuts, rice flour and newly harvested grains.

A visit to ancestral graves comes after the big breakfast. The graves are cleared up days before Chuseok, with grass mowed and weeds plucked out. People take great care in maintaining their family graves, as an unkempt grave is seen as violating filial piety.

Ganggangsullae (강강술래), a circle dance under the bright moon, is one of the most popular forms of Chuseok folk entertainment. Traditionally, village women assembled in a large circle, held hands, and went round and round while chanting a song under the full moon.

The dance begins slowly and gradually picks up speed as the song quickens. The lead singer starts the song and the rest of the women answer by chanting "ganggangsullae" or "ganggangsuwollae."

The origin of the dance dates back hundreds of years. The Japanese attacked the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), but the Korean soldiers were too few in number to fight the larger Japanese army. Legendary Korean Admiral Yi Sun-shin then suggested that all the ladies in a town get together and make a circle.

Then he asked them to go up to the mountains under the bright full moon and spin around. The Japanese saw the dancing women and thought that there were so many Korean soldiers that they ran away. After the war, Koreans performed the dance every year to commemorate the victory.

And so Koreans gather under the bright moon, a symbol of peace and wealth, to share the rewards of a bumper crop and to wish for a life as fulfilling as the moon.

Chuseok (Korean: 추석), originally known as Hangawi (한가위) (from archaic Korean for "great middle"), is a major harvest festival and a three-day holiday in Korea celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar. Like many other harvest festivals, it is held around the Autumn Equinox. As a celebration of the good harvest, Koreans visit their ancestral hometowns and share a feast of Korean traditional food.

Origins of Chuseok :

Historically and according to popular belief, Chuseok originates from Gabae started during the reign of the third king of the kingdom of Silla (57 BC - AD 935), when it was a month-long weaving contest between two teams. Come the day of Gabae, the team that had woven more cloth had won and was treated to a feast by the losing team.

Many scholars also believe Chuseok may originate from ancient shamanistic celebrations of the harvest moon. New harvests are offered to local deities and ancestors, which means Chuseok may have originated as a worship ritual. In some areas, if there is no harvest, worship rituals are postponed, or in areas with no annual harvest, Chuseok is not celebrated.

Traditional customs :
In modern South Korea, on Chuseok there is a mass exodus of Koreans returning to their hometowns to pay respects to the spirits of one's ancestors. People perform ancestral worship rituals early in the morning. They often visit the tombs of their immediate ancestors to trim plants and clean the area around the tomb, and offer food, drink, and crops to their ancestors. Harvest crops are attributed to the blessing of ancestors.

One of the major foods prepared and eaten during the Chuseok holiday is songpyeon (송편), a crescent-shaped rice cake which is steamed upon pine needles. Other dishes commonly prepared are japchae, bulgogi and fruits.

Folk games :
A variety of folk games are played on Chuseok to celebrate the coming of Autumn and rich harvest. Village folk dress themselves to look like a cow or a turtle, and go from house to house along with a Nongak band playing music. Other common folk games played on Chuseok are tug of war, ssireum, archery and gama fighting. Folk games also vary from region to region. Ganggangsullae dance which is forming a circle under a moon is performed by women and children in southwestern coastal regions, and cockfight or bullfighting in the southern regions.

[Article] A famous poem for Thailand Mother's Day ...A Mother's Love...
Original : http://twssg.blogspot.com/

Mother's day in Thailand is celebrated on the birthday of the Queen of Thailand, Queen Sirikit (12 Aug). It started being celebrated around the 1980s as part of the campaign by the Prime Minister of Thailand Prem Tinsulanonda to promote Thailand's Royal family.

In Thailand, 12th August is celebrated as the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit and the nation immerses in celebrations. As the Queen is also regarded as mother to all Thai people, this day is also celebrated as ‘Mother’s Day.’ It’s since 1976 that the celebrations for Queen and for mother are being held every year without cease. Thai people unanimously commemorate this day because of the queen’s benevolence towards needy and poor in the nation. The Queen has captured the hearts of Thai people through her devotion toward welfare and well- being of her people.

A popular saying is that God cannot be present everywhere and so he created mothers. The relationship between a mother and a child is very special and that is as good as truth. A mother means the world to a child, it is she who protects, nourishes, and bestows her child with love and care. It is she who sacrifices many things in life to give the best to her children.

Mother's day is that special day that gives you the perfect opportunity to shower your mom with your love and affection. It gives you the opportunity to tell your mother how much she means to you and pamper her with generous gifts. However, you need not spend a fortune and buy expensive gifts for your mom. You can make her day special with beautiful quotes, poems, and loving words.

Let her know how special her love for you is, and acknowledge all the pain and sacrifice she took to raise you the way you are. Thank her for her unconditional love, for forgiving you when you did something wrong, and held you when the world around condemned you.

Thank her for being at your side when you needed her the most. Remember how she stayed awake at night to protect you when you used to fall sick. Recall all the good times you shared with your mom and tell her how you cherish every moment of your early days.

If you run out of words or do not know how to express your emotions, then here are the lyrics of a famous poem for mother's day titled "A mother's love" beautifully written by "Helen Steiner Rice". Memorize and recite it to your mom or quote your favorite line in a thank you note. Your mom will definitely cherish it and appreciate your effort.

A Mother's Love

A Mother's love is something
that no on can explain,
It is made of deep devotion
and of sacrifice and pain,

It is endless and unselfish
and enduring come what may
For nothing can destroy it
or take that love away . . .

It is patient and forgiving
when all others are forsaking,
And it never fails or falters
even though the heart is breaking . . .

It believes beyond believing
when the world around condemns,
And it glows with all the beauty
of the rarest, brightest gems . . .

It is far beyond defining,
it defies all explanation,
And it still remains a secret
like the mysteries of creation . . .

A many splendored miracle
man cannot understand
And another wondrous evidence
of God's tender guiding hand.

[Article] National Mother’s Day of Thailand.

The 12 August is Her Majesty Queen Sirikit's birthday or วันเฉลิมพระชนมพรรษา สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถ in Thai language. This public holiday is celebrated nationwide as Mother's Day ("WAN MAE HENG CHAT" - วันแม่แห่งชาติ). The Queen is considered as the mother of all Thai people.

Starting a few weeks before the Queen's birthday, all buildings are covered up with Royal symbols and portraits of Her Majesty all over the Thai kingdom.

Born in 1932, Her Majesty the Queen has captured the hearts of the Thai people through her devotion to improving the welfare and well-being of her subjects. The Queen is also known for her efforts in reviving Thailand's folk arts and crafts. Her Majesty's SUPPORT Foundation (Foundation for the Promotion of Supplementary Occupations and Related Techniques) has been established in 1976 to include craft shops in the city and popular tourist areas. It also includes two Thai Folk Arts and Crafts Training Centers at Chitralada Villa and at Bangsai in Ayutthaya.

Every year in August, huge portraits of Her Majesty are raised in temples, administrative buildings, schools, houses, shops by individual people and organizations.

Despite her high office as Queen of the nation, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit is a mother highly regarded by her children. She brought them up in the mold of traditional Thai values in which the junior pay respect to the elder, obey their seniors and learn to be self-sufficient. The benevolence of Her Majesty the Queen praised by her subjects explains the love she has earned from her people who regard her as Mother of the Nation.

On the 12 August early morning time, Thai Buddhist people go to temple and make offerings to monks as usual.

On 12 August, jasmine, symbolic of the selfless virtue of a mother who gives life to her children, is seen everywhere in Thailand. Charitable activities, food offering to monks and donations are part of the events of the day to express children's gratitiude to every mother.

National flags decorate buildings to wish Her Majesty many happy returns of the day and a long life ("SONG PHRA CHAROEUN" -

In civil administrations, there are specific gatherings for the Queen's birthday. On this occasion, civil servants wear their most beautiful clothes. Then they listen to Buddhist sermons and to their director's speech.

During this day or the day before, mothers go to Thai schools. Children say little speechs about their love to their mother. Then every child stand in front of his mother, greet her feet ("WAI" - ไหว้) and say their love towards their mother.

Prince Yeoning (연잉군 1694–1776), to become Yeongjo of Joseon, only known son of Royal Noble Consort Suk of the Haegu Choi clan. His given name was 'Yi Geum', Prince Yeoning was the second son of Sukjong by Lady Suk-bin of the Choi clan , succeeded his older brother Gyeongjong.

King Yeongjo was a deeply Confucian monarch, and is said to have had a greater knowledge of the classics than his officials. During the reign of Yeongjo and his grandson Jeongjo, Confucianization was at its height, as was economic recovery from the wars of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries.

The king is also famous for having treasured Park Mun-su, who was appointed as Amhaeng-eosa (암행어사) or a secret governmental inspector. Park, who had earned great merit in putting down Yi In-ja's rebellion, went around the nation arresting corrupt local officers in the name of the king.

'Dong Yi (동이 / 同伊)' is the old name of Royal Noble Consort Sook of the Choi clan or Choi Sook-bin. She is a concubine of King Suk-jong and King Yeong-jo of Joseon.

'Dong Yi' was a water maid in the palace, under Queen Inhyeon. One night, she was praying in her chamber for Inhyeon's wellness when Sukjong, who was crossing outside after a trip outside of the palace, heard her and, moved by her kindness (Sukjong was having his regrets at that time), made her his concubine. She became suk-bin after the birth of a son in 1694. Besides this son, she had 2 other sons (both disputed).

Queen Inhyeon of King Sukjong of Joseon :
Queen Inhyeon (1667–1701), Daughter of Min Yoo-jung and Lady Song, she became Sukjong's second Queen by marriage in 1681. She is perhaps one of the best known Queens of the Joseon dynasty. Her life was portrayed in many Korean historical dramas. When Jang (given name: Ok-jeong) so-ui produced a son in 1688, it created a bloody dispute called Gisa Sahwa. During this time, Sukjong wanted to give this eldest son the title of Crown Prince and wanted to promote Lady Jang from So-ui to Hee-bin. This action was opposed by the Noron faction (headed by Song Si-yeol, with Min Yoo-jung (Inhyeon's father) as member), and this was supported by the Soron faction (of which Jang Hee-jae ((then) Jang so-ui's older brother) was a member). Sukjong became angry at the opposition, and many were killed including Song Si-yeol. Many, including Inhyeon and her family, were forced into exile. Jang so-ui became Jang Hee-bin, and then became the Queen, with the title of Grand Concubine Oksan (Oksan Taebin).

Later in 1694, Sukjong, feeling remorse at his temperamental actions, gave in to a movement for Inhyeon's reinstatement, which was led by the Soron (this event was called the Gapsul Hwanguk) She was brought back to the palace and reinstated as Queen, with Lady Jang being demoted to Hee-bin. In 1701, age 35, she became ill and died of an unknown disease. It has been said that Jang Hee-bin brought a Shamanist priestess into the palace and prayed for the Queen's death. When this was discovered by Sukjong, she was executed for her actions (by poison). One of the Queen's lady's maids wrote a book called Inhyeon Wanghu Jeon (Queen Inhyeon's Story) which still exists today. She is buried in Myeong-reung in Kyeonggi Province, and Sukjong was later buried near her in the same area. She has no issue to Sukjong.

She is given the posthumous title "Queen Inhyeon, Hyogyeong Sukseong Jangsun Wonhwa Uiyeol Jeongmok" (효경숙성장순원화의열정목인현왕후 孝敬淑聖莊純元化懿烈貞穆仁顯王后).
