Synopsis : Background
The Joseon history was stir in turbulence prior to Sukjong reign. Hideyoshi 1st invasion of Korea 1592-1593 then the 2nd invasion in 1597-1598. Then subsequently Joseon Manchu’s Wars 1627 & 1636 that ended up in humiliation. Joseon throughout the established of the Joseon dynasty has form factions or Bungdang of various names that support or against the ruling Joseon monarchy therefore political powers are field through the Yanban ruling class bureaucrats that often eclipse the power of the monarch. Struggles among faction are plenty & purges are certain to happened, thus ensures constants Yanban vs. the monarchy. It was Sukjong then later Yeongjo who tries to appease these faction by resolving issues & consolidate their political power back to the monarch. Yeongjo in the drama Yi San portrays a Monarch who could read every move of the political faction & sometimes manipulate their intelligence to his own benefits with his wits & able to assess his own Ministers thus gaining an upper hand, in which this wits are set to be inherited from his mother Choi Suk Bin. Jeongjo did it better by keeping the faction at bay by assume military power over the literary Yanban. Sukjong reign during 1674-1720. China was rule by Emperor Kangxi (1662-1722). Japan was rule by the Tokugawa Shogunate. Set during the reign of King Sukjong in the 19th ruler Joseon dynasty, the story focuses on Dong Yi, a water maid who gains the trust of Queen Inhyeon and later the favour of the king when he is moved by her prayers for the health of the Queen during the court disputes caused by Jang Hee Bin. Dong Yi becomes a concubine with the rank of Sook-bin and bears a son who will later become the 21st king of Joseon, Yeongjo. The political faction of Sukjong was the Namin (Southerners) & Seoin (Westerners)
In the drama Yi San, Yeongjo fought very hard to get his birth mother Choi Suk Bin enshrine into the Royal Ancestral tablet & the grievances he has experience due to the court opposition, it was Queen Jeongseong, the 1st Queen of Yeongjo who did her utmost effort & succeeds to have her mother in law enshrined & has the gratitude of Yeongjo
Choi Suk Bin must be a great mother in educating her son to survive those political turmoils & the constant attack over his birth & background that her mother is from a lowly class, in which he was scrutinise but he managed to overcome by able to manipulate the faction. Yeongjo revered his mother that he carried his mother’s rings in memory of her & in turn he bestow to Song Seon Yeon his most dear possession as a gift of being Yi San’s friend
Dong Yi - Episode 1
The year is 1681. The 7th year of Sukjong’s reign. Picturesque opening shot on someone having an early morning fishing as he cast his fishing line. Then another boat comes rowing with a mysterious rower wearing a very big wicker hat called a satgat usually worn by Buddhist monk. The person who is fishing is warming his hand from the cold. The rower is fixing his net as the fishing man asked whether he is a fisherman as the rower confirms. The fishing man said that that waiting up early is really refreshing, he will soon leave & asked him to take over his spot as it is a great spot to fish. The rower thanked him for telling him that & address him as Dae Sa Yong Gam. Da Sa Yong Gam is elder Jang Ik Heon asked whether the rower know him. The rower tilts his satgat & smiles & asked who is he & asked who is he actually. The rower flies & jump over to Da Sa Yong Gam boat & draw out his sword & stab him in the back. Da Sa Yong Gam grips the rower who pull out his sword as he collapse dying, takes something off the rower clothing & falls into the water
Elder Jang Ik Heon is from the Namin (Southern) faction
Meanwhile in a bamboo forest, a couple is running away from pursue in a snow cover tracks. The woman is carrying an infant. A group of police bureau & some bounty hunter are hard on their trails as the group closes in on the couple. Then the police finally caught up with couple & asked where they run to & asked for their capture. As the couple resign to their fate as the police tells them don’t they know, there is nowhere in this world for a runaway slave to run to. Then some mask assailant come swing to the rescue like Tarzan. The assailant tells that that this is just their own thinking that the couple has nowhere to go. The slaves are human & they have a pair of legs, therefore how can it be said that there is no where they can’t go & asked the police whether it is a possibility. The police asked who is the assailant. The assailant laughs that if he wants them to know that he doesn’t need to wear the mask to hid his identity. The assailant tells the police not to pursue the couple, if they are willing to stand down on their swords then he will consider to spare them. The police tells the assailant is insolent to suggest that to them as the police asked whether he wish to see his early death. The police attacks the assailant who skilfully down the police with his rope as he takes the group one after the other, as he was fighting, his mask came off to reveal that it is Cha Cheon Soo as he puts back his mask to cover his face. Then came more Cha Cheon Soo band of brother to come acrobatic in & assist to fight off the police as Choi Dong Joo one of Cha Cheon Soo comrades asked the couple to follow them as the couple obediently follow while Cha Cheon Soo & his other comrades kept busy the police. Cha Cheon Soo goes for the police captain who asked who he is then the police asked whether they are the Geum Gae group. The comrade led the couple to a boat & asked them to take the boat & flee. The boatman will protect them until they are safe. The couple asked whether they are from Geum Gae group. The man heard that in the capital there is Geum Gae secret organisation that helps the common folk in time of desperation & thanked them gratefully for their rescue. The boat man asked them to hurry as they can’t delay any longer. The comrade asked the couple to hurry & asked them to survive at all cost. The couple board the boat as the row man row quickly to their destination.
Geum Gae is a secret organisation or society that made up from the commoners (Cheonmin)
Then Choi Dong Joo (Choi Dong Yi’s brother) takes off the mask as Cha Cheon Soo meets up with him as he tells that the couple safely board on the boat. Cha Cheon Soo said that he will leave for the time being as the police that has run away might has caught his face. Choi Dong Joo tells Cha Cheon Soo to be careful & asked him to leave quickly as the police might catches up in their pursue. Cha Cheon Soo notice a fishing boat that has blood tainted on it floating at the river bank as Choi Dong Joo asked what is the matter as Cha Cheon Soo just brushes it off as nothing. Choi Dong Joo goes & returns as the court musician playing the haegeum to join the ensemble as the court are dancing with activities
The haegeum is a traditional Korean string instrument, resembling a 2 stringed fiddle. It has a rodlike neck, a hollow wooden soundbox, and two silk strings, and is held vertically on the knee of the performer and played with a bow. The instrument is played in performances of court music and folk music. The haegeum is one of the most indispensable of instruments in almost any ensemble. The haegeum is related to similar Chinese instruments in the huqin family of instruments, such as the erhu. Of these, it is most closely related to the ancient xiqin, as well as the erxian used in nanguan and Cantonese music
Then in a village a relay face is commencing with children of the village running the relay as the children cheers for their supporting teams. Choi Dong Yi is one of the children. Choi Dong Yi is the last runner as the referee said that they have to run a round around the village. The boy from the rival team Chang Ma tells that the prize is a honey fried dough twist cake & she resides is the Banchon village’s Chonmin (peasant) that she has never tastes those cakes before, then what is she going to do, if she wants to taste those cakes, she must win the race, then he wonder why the last runner has to be a girl. Choi Dong Yi said that what is rice or porridge, when they open the lid they will find out, it means the winner or the loser, will have to run this race to find out. Chang Ma asked what is Choi Dong Yi muttering. Choi Dong Yi tells Chang Ma that she is just giving him encouragement & said that the rival must run well that since she is a girl, it doesn’t have much of a concern if she loses, but if he loses to a girl that it will be a blow to his ego. Then the baton comes as Choi Dong Yi & the rival picks it up to start their race but the rival kicks her baton away as she tells that he is cheated as they runs through the village then Choi Dong Yi resort to trick to slow down her rival to gain a head start on the race but the rival caught up & pass her as the children cheers for their team.
Honey fried dough twist cake is a sweet snack, a deep fried hand drawn twisted dough with sugar or honey
Banchon is the residence for the lower caste commoner that held non virtues occupation like slaves, butchers, shaman, clobbers, metal workers, registered tenants or workers, prostitutes, magicians, sorcerers, jail keepers & performers like the Gisaeng. Cheonmin is above the untouchable Baekjeong but tend to has segregated lives from the public
Choi Dong Yi crosses the line as her team cheers for her victory. Then the referee gave the victory to the jang Soo village’s Chang Ma. Choi Dong Yi is surprise that the victory is hers & how can they be declare Chang Ma as the winners. The referee said that Choi Dong Yi went against the rules. The referee said that she didn’t run on the main route of the race but ran on the smaller routes therefore she is being forfeited & the victory goes to Chang Ma. Choi Dong Yi said that she didn’t break the rules as the referee didn’t specific said what was the route to take but the general route of the village & that the victory is theirs as she cheers her team on. The referee asked them to shut their trap from debate as what do Cheonmin peasant children know about anything. Choi Dong Yi argue that the victory is theirs. The referee chase them away & declare the rival the winner. Choi Dong Yi can’t believe that the win is not in their favours as the children said that they never able to savour those cakes. Choi Dong Yi looks at the prize with a cover & she goes to the cakes as the Chang Ma’s team cheers their victory as the referee goes over the present the cakes to the Chang Ma team & open the cover only to finds in its place stones as the children asked what is this.
The referee asked what is happening here then Chang Ma finds that Choi Dong Yi & his team sneaking away with the cakes in their mouth eating away. The referee shouts at them as Choi Dong Yi shouts to her team to make a run as they got found out as Chang Ma sounds the pursue to give chase. Choi Dong Yi tells that her team knows where to meet & asked them to disperse as the Chang Ma chases Choi Dong Yi & Gae Do Ra then hides under the stone bridge to evade Chang Ma & the pursuers. Chang Ma asked his team to disperse to look for them & swear that he will find Choi Dong Yi at all cost & left looking. Choi Dong Yi comes out from her hiding after they left that she doesn’t fear anyone of them. Then she finds Gae Do Ra eating the cakes as Choi Dong Yi tells that he can’t eat anymore as she specially wants to save the cakes for her family to eat. Gae Do Ra apologise that she just allow him to eat just one. Choi Dong Yi said that she shouldn’t have the cat to look after the fish means to leave the cakes under Gae Do Ra’s care, then Jang Ik Heon falls unconsciousness behind Choi Dong Yi as Gae Do Ra gets a shock seeing a bloody Jang Ik Heon & drop his cakes on the ground as Choi Do Yi said that is he crazy to drop the cake as she tries to blow the dirt of the cakes as Gae Do Ra tells that there is a dead body behind her. Choi Dong Yi turns around & surprise to see the unconscious Jang Ik Heon
Choi Dong Yi goes to check his pulse reading as Gae Do Ra panics & tells that is it a corpse & asked her what to do. Choi Dong Yi said that Jang Ik Heon is not dead yet. Choi Dong Yi tells that if a person is alive because there is no sign of lividity in him then Jang Ik Heon grabs Choi Dong Yi’s ankle as she gave a loud scream out of fright. This sends Gae Do Ra runs off calling for help. Choi Dong Yi begs to release her & asked Jang Ik Heon not to harm her . Jang Ik Heon quivers his mouth to say something but too weak to voice as Choi Dong Yi asked what he is saying. Jang Ik Hyeon wants to pass the ornament he took from the rower as Choi Dong Yi asked how is he is when he starts to vomit blood. Jang Ik Heon trying to tells Choi Dong Yi something by making hands gestures but Choi Dong Yi asked him to reserve his strength by not talking that he has vomited a lot of blood. Choi Dong Yi asked Jang Ik Heon to hold on as she goes to finds some help
Choi Dong Yi runs for help but doesn’t know which directions she supposed to go. Meanwhile Jang Ik Hyeon puts his snatch “ornament” into Choi Dong Yi’s straw bag. Choi Dong Yi asking the police to hurry & show them to Jang Ik Heon to tell them that he is going to die soon. The police calls Jang Ik Heon whom by now has expired & lifeless as they check for his breathing & pulse to find that he is dead. Choi Dong Yi said that Jang Ik Heon shouldn’t be as she check for pulse & breathing in Jang Ik Heon as she tells that he was alive when she left him as she wonder why he is dead as she check his vital sign again
In the palace, Oh Tae Seok learns that Jang Ik Hyeon is found dead. The guard report that not only that, in the meantime that the Justice official Yi Ju Yeo & Hang Jung Soo are found dead at Anguk Dong & Gye Dong respectively. Oh Tae Seok asked how can this be happening. The body of the slain officials are examine on the crime scene by the police bureau. Then at the crime scene of Jang Ik Heon the police constable & coroner are examine the body as Choi Dong Yi tells the police constable & coroners that they procedure is wrong as the body that has been submerge into water should be shroud in linen rather than straw, all the evidence will vanish & damaged if it is handle this way, then she tells that they didn’t comb the area for the body’s other artifacts. The police constable slaps Choi Dong Yi to asked what is she muttering about on their police business. Choi Do Yi apologise to the police constable as she just making a comment that they are handling the body in the wrong method in removing the corpse from the scene. The police asked what she is saying as Choi Dong Yi tells that it is said in the Wo Yeon Muk manual of forensic science that a body that has been submerge in water must be handle by shrouding in linen. Choi Dong Yi said look at the body, there is wrinkles in the skin then it will blisters & the skin will start to separate from the body when the weather gets warmer
Determining the time of death of a drowning victim can be a difficult process. Submersion under water, even for a relatively short period of time, decomposes the body quickly and leads to tissue breakdown that makes it harder to determine a time of death
The police asked what does Choi Dong Yi understands, then the police captain comes in to tell that what she say is correct, then the police captain reprimand his subordinate that he doesn’t even know the basic in handling body for forensic & how can he call himself a police constable. The police captain tells the police constable to do as what Choi Dong Yi has suggested. The police constable acknowledged. The police sergeant Hwang Jung Gun said that Choi Dong Yi is an intelligent girl & where did she learn her knowledge from. Choi Dong Yi tells that her father is a coroner. The police sergeant said so it is. The police captain asked whether Choi Dong Yi was the person who discover jang ik Heon’s body. The police sergeant said that she is. The police captain takes Choi Dong Yi aside & asked her to listen very careful to what he is about to say, if she said something correctly then he promise her a reward.
Oh Jan In is the coroner or the corpse examiner, but it is consider a lowly occupation much like the jail keeper
Choi Dong Yi surprise that the police captain mentioned a reward. The police captain said that he will give her a large reward of 5 cents but she needs to tell him thoroughly on what he is about to asked from her. Choi Dong Yi acknowledge. The police captain tells that when Jang Ik Hyeon was alive when she discover him, did he said anything. Choi Dong Yi affirms that he was trying to say something. The police captain is surprise & asked what did he say to her. Choi Dong Yi hesitates as police captain is anxious as he asked Choi Dong Yi to speak up. Choi Dong Yi said that he didn’t utter any sound that he just quivers his mouth. The captain still insisted what Jang Ik Hyeon has said & did he say anything. Choi Dong Yi said that he did say something but she can’t make anything out of it. The police captain said that he thought he has some clues but all comes to a dead end. Choi Dong Yi asked whether she still entitled to the reward that he promise then. The police captain knocks her head that she is of no help at all where will she received the rewards & leaves. The police captain said that he wasted his time coming here. Choi Dong Yi said that she was so close to getting that 5 cents & now it has a burst in a bubble
Then Seo Yong Gil rounded his police force as he asked where are the bodies. The police captain said that they all has been collected in the morgue then Seo Yong Gil asked about whether they has cone off the crime scene to preserve the evidence, the police captain said that they has preserved any trace evidence at crime scene as they need to protect the scene from interference then Seo Yong Gil the cause of death & the time of death. The police sergeant comes to say that the bodies has not perform an primary examination on the bodies for this moment in time….Seo Yong Gil question that they still haven’t. The police sergeant apologise that he will proceed with it right away. Seo Yong Gil asked what is Hwang Jing Gun current position. Hwang Jung Gun said that he is a sergeant Hwang Jung Gun. Seo Yong Gil said that the police sergeant is really slow, incapable & useless. The police captain in this bureau who has given him such an appraisal for his job is a little way out of line in his recommendation. Hwang Jung Gun is surprise as Seo Yong Gil tells that from now onwards he is just a police constable. Hwang Jung Gun asked what does this means as Seo Yong Gil said that person must know where his limitation lies as he asked his assistant that he wants to see the bodies then meanwhile he asked the his assistant to go & look for a person he is seeking for as Hwang Jung Gun plead his case on his recent demotion
Choi Dong Joo leaves the palace as he avoids the palace guard contact. Then a police constable notice him being suspicious at approach him but Choi Dong Yo calls out to her brother as the police constable walk pass him with much relieve as he greets his sister & asked her why she is here. Choi Dong Yi said that she was at the street market to win a race & wanted to return home together with her brother. At home, Choi Dong Joo is surprise at her sister’s outing. Choi Dong Yi related her discovery to her brother as Choi Dong Joo asked whether she was frightened seeing a dead man. Choi Dong Yi tells that their father is a coroner that she has seen so many corpses during his examination, she also has read those forensic books. Then their father Choi Hyo Won brings the meal tray to them & asked them to eat. Choi Dong Joo relay to their father that Choi Dong Yi is indeed brave that he dare to race against a boy that she is really a General
Choi Dong Yi asked what is with being a girl. What is the use of brute strength that they need to use their intelligence that is more important. Choi Hyo Won tells that his daughter is correct, what difference is it being boy or girl; what is it has to comes down is capabilities. Yangmin are class as commoner. In Joseon 75% of the population belong to this class. It is commonly known as Sangmin but Yangmin is the polite term. Meanwhile the Chonmin are the lowest of the Korean caste society then a step lower is the Baekjeong
Then Choi Dong Yi remembers as she wants her brother & father to taste the cakes. Choi Hyo Won tells that this are honey fried dough twist. Seo Yong Gil comes in to ask that he is must be Choi Dong Joo & asked Choi Dong Joo to let the person go as he is his colleague. Choi Hyo Won comes out to greet Seo Yong Gil. Seo Yong Gil tells Choi Hyo Won that it has been a while
Choi Hyo Won follows Seo Yong Gil back as Seo Yong Gil tells Choi Hyo Won that it has been 5 years since they have last met. Choi Hyo Won asked why does Seo Yong Gil want to finds him. Seo Yong Gil laughs that he works in the police bureau, if he wants to locate a coroner, there is no doubt that he will able to find them without effort. Seo Yong Gil question why Choi Hyo Won left without saying a word. Seo Yong Gil said that it is has left a distaste in him that he really wants to find out then really wants to asked the truth from Choi Hyo Won. Choi Hyo Won felt that he has his reason for doing so, that is why he is waiting for Choi Hyo Won to tell him why. Choi Hyo Won tells that Seo Yong Gil must not be to close associate with him as he is a Cheonmin, or else it will tarnish his reputation that he must aware of the consequences. Seo Yong Gil question that in Choi Hyo Won’s eyes whether Seo Yong Gil is the kind of person who placed considerate importance on his reputation. Seo Yong Gil said that Choi Hyo Won is a Cheonmin but however in regards to him at heart, Choi Hyo Won is seen as his teacher. Choi Hyo Won is surprise as Seo Yong Gil walks on & Choi Hyo Won follows
Hwang Jung Gun asked why so late in the night that they has to examine the bodies. The police captain doesn’t know, but he has heard that Seo Yong Gil has personally brought an expert tonight to examine the bodies. Choi Hyo Won goes through the corpses looking for evidence. Hwang Jung Gun said is that the expert that was mentioned is none other just a Cheonmin coroner. Seo Yong Gil asked for the preliminary finding from Choi Hyo Won. Choi Hyo Won said that all the 3 corpses were killed by the slash wounds from a sword then said that the assailant has use a very sharp sword was his stroke were lethal to bring death. Seo Yong Gil said that the police bureau here has report that it has been done by Cheong Bo sword & asked whether it is correct as Choi Hyo Won confirms as accurate. Seo Yong Gil tells that police bureau here is not as useless as he is perceived. Seo Yong Gil asked Choi Hyo Won where he thinks that scene of the crime happened.

Choi Hyo Won said that there is 2 corpses who were killed at the spot where they were found but jagn Ik Heon was killed somewhere else. The police captain said that the body floated from the river, how can they make an assessment where he was killed by just looking at the body. Seo Yong Gil said that how did Choi Hyo Won come to conclude this as Choi Hyo Won heard that Jang Ik Heon loves to fish at dawn. The police captain asked how can Choi Hyo Won be so sure that it is at Samban jetty, there are so many hundred of fishing spots in the capital to fish. Choi Hyo Won said that to fish those kind of bi myeol fish, there aren’t many spots, maybe just in their tens. The corpse has evidence of the scales of bi myeol fish has been found in the palm of his hands. The police are surprise as Choi Hyo Won adds that jang Ik Heon sustain such a slash then falls into the cold river, before he was pushes up to the banks that he could have died but however he still have some breath in him that it is to indicate accurately that when Jang Ik Heon fell into the water, the temperature in the water was warm. Seo Yong Gil queries that the river water’s temperature.
Choi Hyo Won affirms that today the river flow from the south is blowing a warm breeze that the temperature rises because it is spring, that it will indicate that he was on the river that is flowing south side that he will able to fish bi myeol fish, it because of the weather, giving the calculation that in 4 hours to row a boat for 10 ri (miles) & judging on how the flow of the river, it should be in Samban jetty. Seo Yong Gil order the police bureau to go to samban jetty & confirm that facts. The Assistant acknowledge & leaves. Seo Yong Gil concurs that it should be that place

The search of samban bay where they found Jang Ik Hyeon’s fishing boat. Meanwhile Seo Yong Gil serve tea to Choi Hyo Won telling him that he is serving the tea he likes which is Cha Sul tea. Choi Hyo Won tells Seo Yong Gil that he still can remember. Seo Yong Gil said that seeing him in action today that his perspective of seeing matter defers from others that he has mentioned that he can’t go without Choi Hyo Won as Choi Hyo Won takes his tea. Seo Yong Gil said that these murders are not just a simple open & close murders. Seo Yong Gil said that it is a ploy to kill Yanban class as a motive to operated this murders. Choi Hyo Won apologise to interrupts that Seo Yong Gil have any guess who is behind these murders. In the Joseon Royal Tomb, the characters of Dong Yi are buried. Myeongneung (明陵) is the royal tomb of the 19th King Sukjong (1661-1720) of the Joseon Dynasty & his 2nd Queen Consort or principal wife, Queen Inhyeon (1667-1700) and his 3rd principal wife, Queen Inwon (1687-1757), from the Gim family, married Sukjong went she was 15 years old after Inhyeon’s death in 1702. She survive smallpox at 1711, then she became Dowager Queen (Wangdaebi) after her husband’s death in 1720, and Daewangdaebi in 1724 after Gyeongjong son by Royal Consort Jang Hee-bin dies & Yeongjo son by Royal Consort Choi Suk Bin, whom she favoured, became King. She had no children and died in 1757 at age of 70. The years of King Sukjong were filled with the greatest turbulence in political power in the history of the Joseon Dynasty, and fierce competition was under way among political factions. However, King Sukjong strengthened royal powers and almost completed the work to restore and improve the overall social systems. Queen Ingyeong, the 1st principal wife & Queen Consort of King Sukjong, is laid separately in the Ingneung, located inside of the Seooreung. Queen Ingyeong died of smallpox at the age of 20 in 1680. It means that she has already passed away in this drama as the drama take up at the year 168. Jang Hee Bin, the mother of King Gyeongjong, and Choi Suk Bin, the mother of King Yeongjo, were Royal Consort of King Sukjong therefore they can’t be buried with Sukjong. Remember in Yi San, Song Seon Yeon who was Royal Consort Eui Bin didn’t get buried with Jeongjo but was buried with her son Crown Prince Munhyo in Hyochangwon at Seosamneung. Queen Inhyeon became his second lawful wife in 1681. She was dethroned because of a false accusation by Jang Hee Bin, but was restored again with the Gapsulhwanguk (甲戌換局, the incident through which the Namin faction lost the power and the Seoron and the Noron factions returned to the government. She died in the 26th year of King Sukjong from an unknown disease. The third lawful wife, Queen Inwon, was installed as Queen in 1702 and died in 1757

Daebinmyo is the royal tomb of Jang Hee Bin or just Hee Bin (禧嬪, died 1701) from the Jang family. She was a royal concubine of the 19th King Sukjong of the Joseon Dynasty and the mother of King Gyeongjong. Jang Hee Bin entered the palace at a young age as a court lady, and won King Sukjong’s favour. In 1686 (the 12th year of King Sukjong), she became Sukwon (淑媛), a rank given to a Royal Concubine, and delivered Prince Yun later King Gyeongjong in 1688. In the following year, when King Sukjong invested Prince Yun as a lawful son turning down an objection from Song Si Yeol & the Seoin (西人), a political faction during the reign of Sukjong, she was raised to be the 1st rank lady of a court, Hee Bin. In the same year, the Namin (南人), a political faction split from the Dongin (Easterners) came into political power with the Gisahwanguk incident (己巳換局, massacre of the intellect scholars) & Queen Inhyeon (仁顯王后) was deposed. When Prince Yun was invested as the Crown Prince, Jang hee Bin was installed as Queen. In 1694, the Namin rose in rebellion against the King Sukjong & with the restoration movement of Queen Inhyeon spur by the Seoin as a momentum. However, King Sukjong eliminated the Namin and made the Seoin faction to return to power again. With the restoration of Queen Inhyeon, Jang Hee Bin was demoted to her former rank as Hee Bin. When the Queen Myeongseong, mother of Sukjong died of a disease in 1701, Jang Hee Bin was impeached by the Seoin for the crime of falsely accusing Queen Inhyeon & received a death sentence by poison. Since then, King Sukjong prohibited elevating the Bin (Royal Consort) to the Queen Consort by law. She was originally entombed in Munhyeong-ri Opo-myeon Gwangju-gun Gyeonggi-do. Her tomb was moved to its current place in 1969.
